Directions & General Information
Sunset Ridge didn’t start off as a country club. Instead, it started off as an idea shared by ten young men in 1922. With just three simple precepts, these young men set off on an adventure, guided by a mission that they referred to as “The Idea.”
The Idea on which our Club was founded:
The development of a great golf course with facilities for other sports activities;
The maintenance of a fellowship of congenial souls and their families; and
The establishment of an environment in which neither business gain, political bias, nor personal advantage can survive.
As the years pass and we go forward with new facilities, new amenities and new members, we hold to the old civilities that help preserve The Idea of Sunset Ridge. Sunset Ridge Country Club was created in 1923 by a group of young men in their thirties. In early May 1923, the sale was finalized for the property, William Diddel was retained to design and build the golf course and construction began almost immediately on May 7. The original membership was limited to 250 members and all memberships were sold.
The Club recently celebrated our 90th Anniversary and rich history on the North Shore. For over forty years, Sunset Ridge was the last private club on Chicago’s North Shore to host the Western Open, hosting the event in 1972. Bob Harris, our head Golf Professional in 1972, was recently inducted into the Illinois PGA Hall of Fame. A brief video about Bob and his storied professional career and accomplishments, can be viewed by clicking HERE.
Today, Sunset Ridge has over 600 member families and a vast offering of amenities. There is an 18-hole golf course, Short Game Practice Area, Indoor Golf Learning Center, a Practice Range, a swimming pool, 8 clay tennis courts, skeet & trap range and 6 platform tennis courts. The Club has completed award winning renovations to our Clubhouse facilities and golf course. Sunset Ridge was awarded the 2006 Private Club Golf Course Renovation of the Year by Golf, Inc. magazine. The Clubhouse renovations were a Club Management Magazine Design Showcase award winner in 2005. Over the last eight years the Club has completed over $18 million in improvements.
The Club is open from February through December. During these 11 months the Club has an active social calendar of parties, weddings and fashion shows, business meetings, birthdays, holiday parties and family affairs. Many of our members live in the surrounding communities and the Club is a convenient focal point for their social activities.
The tradition of our active family membership is well known throughout the entire North Shore. Membership is available by invitation from a current member of the Club only.
